LEICA STORE BELLEVUE

Legacy highlights SUB13's one-of-a-kind builds.

We were tasked with creating a singular unit from our M6 Production Run, designed to celebrate 70 years of Leica M, specifically for Leica Store Bellevue. After brainstorming ideas, we unanimously agreed on featuring a killer whale to honour Washington State, where it holds the title of official state marine mammal.

We dedicated considerable time to refining the drawing and layout, going back and forth, mocking up versions, and making adjustments until everything looked right. It is surprising how much effort goes into preparation, often leaving only a narrow window to complete the final machining.

Despite our planning efforts, challenges arose when key parts were delayed in customs, leaving us scrambling to complete the unit in time. Kate had to depart for her flight, while last-minute arrangements were made for Toby to deliver the housing. Everything hinged on a customs release within the remaining 48-hour window, followed by assembling, pressure testing, and photographing the unit for our records.

Toby arrived in Seattle the night before Draper’s Odyssey opening, housing in hand, and was given the honour of presenting the piece to the Bellevue team in recognition of his commitment.

This uniquely Washington-inspired underwater housing is now on display at Leica Store Bellevue, featuring laser-engraved and paint-filled detailing.
